WebMCP

Offer your tools to AI assistants in your visitors' browsers with one script tag, and how that fits with the MCP server, assistant apps and A2A.

WebMCP offers your tools to AI assistants running in your visitors' browsers, such as a browser's built-in assistant or an assistant extension, while they're on your website. You add one script tag to your pages. An assistant there can then list your products, explain cover, answer questions, book a callback and pass on a visitor's details, using answers from you instead of guessing from the page.

It's a website embed, so it's documented with the other embeds. See WebMCP for the quick start, installing the snippet and the tools.

How it fits with the rest#

All four ways of working with AI assistants use MCP's idea of tools: named actions with a description an assistant reads to decide when to use them. They differ in who's asking and where.

Where the assistant is Who it acts for Signing in Tools
MCP server Anywhere: Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, your own client You, in your Subcontext account You sign in and approve it Everything in Subcontext you grant
Assistant apps Inside ChatGPT or Claude A member of the public None Quotes, interest, callbacks and questions you choose
WebMCP In a visitor's browser, on your website A visitor to your website None. Only your listed websites can use it Products, questions, callbacks and leads you choose
A2A agent card On another business's server Another AI agent None Questions for your agent

The public three (assistant apps, WebMCP and A2A) live together in the dashboard under Organisation > Agent access, need agent access on your plan, and report together in Insights under Agent access. You can use any mix of them. For example, you might use an assistant app for people in ChatGPT, WebMCP on your website, and an agent card for partners.

Choosing between WebMCP and an assistant app#

  • If people find you on your website, WebMCP helps the assistant in their browser while they're there. Browser support is still experimental, so for now few visitors will have it.
  • If people start in ChatGPT or Claude, an assistant app lets them reach you without visiting your website at all.
