The arrival of Google AdWords in 2000 catapulted unknown companies into established market players in almost every industry. The ability to target intention, rather than advertising space, fuelled ecommerce, changed shopping behaviour and rewired consumer expectations.
For protection, almost every step since pay per click has focused on optimisation. Lead generation, which arrived in life insurance in 2007, was simply a way for advertisers to build reliable business models on fixed costs and price landing page form fills.
In 2027, OpenAI's advertising platform will be the biggest disruption to the customer journey in three decades. It will change the way consumers find protection and, in turn, which brokers and insurers write the most business.
When a new distribution channel opens, speed, technical capability and ambition matter more than size.
Why is ChatGPT advertising so important? A Google search ad matched a keyword and it relied on consumers knowing what they needed and going looking for it. A ChatGPT advert sits inside a conversation. Here are two examples:
"We're having our first baby in February. How will we manage when one of us must stop working?"
"I've just started working for myself. What should I be thinking about financially?"
Neither person is searching for life insurance, income protection or critical illness cover. They're having conversations about life and each one describes a protection need.
Whilst Google AdWords let advertisers target what consumers were searching for, conversational AI will let advertisers reach consumers' circumstances and instincts, which will become a far more powerful way to sell a product.
Once the basis for understanding human intention shifts, the buying model will need to shift too, to accommodate a new type of consumer.
If a protection brand can capture and nurture an insurance need, only pushing them into a call centre queue is no longer going to be acceptable.
What will the impact of AI advertising be? Acquisition will be repriced in favour of innovators. Early AdWords auctions were cheap because most advertisers waited to see what everyone else would do. The AI advertising window will open the same way and close around a handful of winners, again.
The journey becomes persistent rather than transactional. A consumer spots a need while discussing their mortgage, returns over several conversations, continues on WhatsApp and asks for an adviser when it matters. The value moves from whoever buys the lead last to whoever captures the conversation first.
The established order will be disrupted. Today's largest distributors are built around keywords, comparison and diallers. They hold institutional advantages in brand, insurer relationships and regulatory expertise, but those don't transfer automatically to the new world. Uber didn't build a mobile site for booking taxis. It built an easier way to pay for a journey from A to B. The next giants of protection distribution might not exist yet.
Late adopters get left behind. An assistant can only describe what it understands, so products, eligibility and underwriting rules it cannot use will be described badly, or not at all.
The market will grow. The FCA puts the unprotected population at 31 million UK adults. AI conversation reaches people when their circumstances change, simpler entry products let them add cover as their lives move on. If the industry is serious about reaching new customers rather than rebroking existing ones, this is the opportunity of a generation.
Three things everyone should do by the end of 2026 Build the company context. Products, ideal customer segment, eligibility, prices, underwriting rules and compliance oversight, exposed through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that AI agents and large language models can read. If you can't do this, you are not even on the starting line. You are Blockbuster Video. Build the conversation. Every insurer and distributor will need an agent connected to pricing and underwriting that can explain, quote and hand over to an adviser without starting again. Those agents will need hundreds of hours of testing, compliance questions and commercial validation. In this new world, your AI assistant becomes your website. Test in 2026, budget for 2027. The revolution won't be a polite, orderly transition from Google Search to LLM advertising, and businesses will need to learn from conversations before deploying spend. Which questions signal a need, where do conversations stall, when do we escalate to a human? These are new marketing lifecycle rules that need to be built. The firms that learned AdWords early owned the channel for a decade and built subsidiary services and advantages on the momentum of their initial investment. Exactly the same thing is going to happen again.
